Wine grapes were grown on both islands since the 19th century, but two events precluded the rush for and subsequent dominance of NZ Sauvignon Blanc, both in the 1980's. First, due to a wine glut, the government paid farmers to rip up their old, unprofitable vines. Right after, phylloxera hit, wiping out more vines. Both incidents resulted in the planting of new, profitable, rootstock-grafted Sauvignon Blanc.
